The numbers look calm on paper, steady and polite, stamped with the word normal. But what if normal is the very thing holding you back?
The problem with normal lab ranges is that they are designed to define disease, not optimize health. And if you are a busy adult juggling a business, a family, and the relentless pace of life in Las Vegas, “not diseased” is a very low bar.
I am Dr. Cristy Thomas, and at Vitality Medical and Wellness Center, I practice performance medicine for busy adults. My patients are not looking to barely pass a lab test. They want energy that lasts past 3 PM. They want mental clarity in board meetings. They want strength, confidence, and longevity. They want to feel like themselves again.
And too often, they are told everything is “normal.”
What “Normal” Really Means in Medicine
Let me explain how standard lab ranges are created. A reference range is typically based on statistical averages. Laboratories collect data from a large population and determine where 95 percent of values fall. That becomes “normal.”
Here is the problem.
That population includes people who are stressed, inflamed, sedentary, sleep deprived, prediabetic, and hormonally imbalanced. In other words, it reflects the average American, not the optimal human.
If 70 percent of adults are metabolically unhealthy, and we use them to define normal, we are setting the bar dangerously low.
- Normal does not mean optimal.
- Normal does not mean thriving.
- Normal often means common.
And common today includes fatigue, weight gain, low libido, brain fog, and poor sleep.
The Executive with “Normal” Testosterone
I frequently see high performing business owners in their 40s and 50s. They are successful, driven, and disciplined. But they tell me the same story.
“I am more tired than I used to be.”
“My workouts are not working.”
“I feel flat.”
We check their testosterone. The lab range might say 300 to 1000 ng/dL is normal. If they come back at 325, they are told they are fine.
But are they?
At 325, many men experience low energy, reduced muscle mass, increased abdominal fat, and decreased drive. They are technically normal, but far from optimal.
The same applies to women. A woman in her late 30s or 40s may be told her estrogen, progesterone, or thyroid is within range. Yet she is battling weight gain, irritability, insomnia, and heavy cycles.
Her labs are normal.
Her life does not feel normal.
The Thyroid Trap
The thyroid is another area where the problem with normal lab ranges shows up clearly.
Many physicians only check TSH. If it falls within the wide lab range, the patient is reassured. But TSH alone does not tell the whole story. Free T3, Free T4, reverse T3, and thyroid antibodies provide a much more complete picture.
I have seen countless patients with a “normal” TSH who still struggle with fatigue, hair thinning, cold intolerance, and stubborn weight gain. When we dig deeper, we often uncover suboptimal thyroid function that was missed by a basic screen.
For parents trying to keep up with children, careers, and aging parents, suboptimal thyroid function feels like running through sand. You are moving, but every step costs too much energy.
The Metabolic Mirage
If you are interested in longevity, this next part matters deeply.
A fasting glucose of 99 mg/dL is considered normal. But from a metabolic perspective, that number may signal early insulin resistance. The same applies to hemoglobin A1c levels that creep toward the upper end of the range.
By the time someone crosses into “prediabetes,” the process has often been developing for years.
Standard ranges are reactive. Performance medicine is proactive.
For high income professionals who value strategy in their business, this concept makes sense. You do not wait for your company to fail before reviewing your financials. You monitor trends, optimize systems, and intervene early.
Your body deserves the same level of leadership.
Hormones and the 35 to 60 Transition
Between 35 and 60, hormones shift dramatically for both men and women.
Women experience perimenopause and menopause. Progesterone declines first, often years before estrogen drops significantly. Symptoms begin while labs may still appear “within range.”
Men experience a gradual decline in testosterone and changes in cortisol and DHEA. They may notice increased belly fat, irritability, and reduced motivation.
In conventional care, unless numbers fall outside the lab range, little is offered.
In performance medicine, we ask a different question.
Are your numbers optimal for your goals?
If you want to build muscle, maintain cognitive sharpness, support sexual health, and extend your health span, you need more than “not abnormal.”
You need precision.
Independent Physician Care Matters
At Vitality Medical and Wellness Center Las Vegas, you are not a rushed appointment squeezed into a system focused on volume. I am an independent physician. That means I have the freedom to spend time with you, to look deeper, and to personalize your care.
We do not treat lab values in isolation. We treat you.
- Your goals.
- Your stress load.
- Your sleep.
- Your family history.
- Your ambitions.
Whether you are a business owner who cannot afford burnout, a parent who wants stamina for both work and home, or someone focused on longevity and peak performance, your plan should reflect your life.
From Weight Loss to Performance Medicine
Yes, we help with weight loss. But the deeper mission is metabolic strength, hormonal balance, and long term vitality.
When we address insulin resistance, optimize thyroid function, balance hormones, and correct nutrient deficiencies, weight often becomes a byproduct of improved physiology.
- Energy improves.
- Sleep stabilizes.
- Mood lifts.
- Body composition changes.
This is performance medicine for busy adults. It is strategic, data driven, and deeply personal.
Why You Deserve More Than “Normal”
If you have been told your labs are normal but you do not feel like yourself, I want you to hear this clearly.
- You are not imagining it.
- You are not weak.
- You are not just aging.
There is a difference between surviving and performing.
The problem with normal lab ranges is that they protect against liability. They do not guarantee vitality.
- You deserve clarity.
- You deserve strength.
- You deserve a physician who listens.
If you are between 35 and 60, managing responsibilities at the highest level, and feeling the quiet signs of decline, now is the time to look deeper.
