What Is Tirzepatide and Liraglutide?
While not semaglutide, there are several other prescription medications commonly confused with semaglutide, including Mounjaro® (tirzepatide) and liraglutide. These medications have a similar history to semaglutide and were originally created to help patients with type 2 diabetes control blood sugar levels.
Tirzepatide, commonly known by its brand name Mounjaro®, works similarly to semaglutide (like Ozempic®); however, it acts on GIP and GLP-1 receptors, instead of only GLP-1 receptors. In some clinical studies, some patients experienced higher levels of weight loss with tirzepatide.
Liraglutide also works in a similar manner; however, clinical studies have shown that this medication cannot reach the weight loss levels offered with semaglutide.

Am I a Candidate for Semaglutide or Tirzepatide Treatment?
Semaglutide injections or capsules are approved for patients with a body mass index (BMI) over 30 or who have a BMI over 27 with weight-related medical problems like high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or some heart conditions.
Under direct medical supervision, semaglutide or tirzepatide for weight loss is safe and effective for most patients. In addition to its positive weight loss results, semaglutide does not alter mood like other weight loss drugs. This treatment simply reduces cravings and suppresses appetite.
Who Should Not Take Semaglutide or Tirzepatide ?
Semaglutide can cause inflammation of the pancreas or gallbladder disease in some people and may increase the risk of thyroid cancer. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should also not receive treatment with semaglutide as it poses harm to the fetus.
Do not take semaglutide injections if you have a history or high risk of developing the following conditions:
- Pancreatitis
- Gallbladder disease
- Medullary thyroid cancer
- Multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2
Common side effects of semaglutide include:
- Nausea
- Constipation
- Heartburn
- Dizziness
- Diarrhea
These side effects are typically temporary and subside as your body adjusts to the medication.

Is the cost of DNA testing covered by insurance?
Yes, DNA testing is covered by most medical insurances, including Medicare, and most commercial insurance plans cover DNA testing. Each patient is required to meet with Dr. Thomas, DNP, APRN. If we determine that you meet certain qualifications and that genetic testing will benefit your treatment program, DNA testing will be done and ordered the same day. For insurance plans with high deductibles, there are some financial assistance programs available that can limit your copay. We can discuss your insurance options during your appointment.
