What is Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT)?
Hormone replacement therapy is the use of either synthetic or bio-Identical hormones, identical to those organically created by the body to produce optimal hormone levels where hormone deficiencies otherwise exist. Quite simply, hormone replacement therapy supplements a lack of naturally occurring hormones within a patient.
Hormone replacement therapy is most commonly associated with boosting estrogen levels in women experiencing or having gone through menopause. It is also commonly used to address andropause in men, a medical condition resulting in depression, lowered libido, and increased body fat because of low testosterone.
What Does Hormone Replacement Therapy Do? Am I A Candidate for HRT?
Hormone replacement therapy helps put an end to suffering caused by:
- Stress induced adrenal fatigue
- Signs of early menopause (such as hot flashes)
- Low hormone levels in males of all ages
According to the Mayo Clinic, without the use of hormone replacement therapy, women who have experienced early menopause, and in particular women who have had their ovaries removed, have a higher risk of lowered libido, osteoporosis, heart disease, depression, and even earlier death. Men with low testosterone face similar increases in health-related risks.
Both men and women will experience lower levels of gender specific hormones as they age. It is therefor important to always be cognizant of the following symptoms as they may be a sign of hormonal imbalances:
- Sleep Disturbances
- Aches and Pains
- Sweating and Hot Flashes
- Memory and Concentration Decline
- Bone Loss (osteopenia or osteoporosis)
- Loss of Height
- Lowered Libido and/or Erectile Dysfunction
- Decreased Muscle Mass
- Increased Body Fat (especially abdominal fat)
Candidates who may not be right for HRT include those with a history of breast or uterus cancer, disease of the liver, or a history of blood clots within the veins, legs, or lungs.
How Does Hormone Replacement Therapy Work?
At Vitality Medical & Wellness we work closely with compounding specialists to provide customized treatments for both men and women. We perform MicroNutrient tests and hormone blood work to determine the best options for your HRT. Needed hormones are tailored to the individual in the most appropriate strength and dosage form to meet their gender-specific needs. Finally, treatments are integrated with proper fitness and nutrition regimes for the best results.
Data supports that hormone replacement therapy with pellet implants, used since the late 1930s, is the most effective and the most bio-identical method to deliver hormones. Implants, placed under the skin and roughly the size of a grain of rice, consistently release small, physiologic doses of hormones over a 3-6 month period, providing optimal results. Hormone replacement therapy may also be administered intravenously, topically using creams, or orally in the form of a pill. We will discuss your options during your consultation to determine which method of HRT is right for you.
What are the Risks of Hormone Replacement Therapy?
According to the Mayo Clinic, “hormone therapy, particularly estrogen combined with a progestin, can make [a women’s] breasts look more dense on mammograms, making breast cancer more difficult to detect. Also, especially when taken for more than a few years, hormone therapy increases the risk of breast cancer, a finding confirmed in multiple studies of different hormone therapy combinations…”
The largest clinical trial to date found an increased risk of heart disease, stroke, blood clots, and breast cancer in women ingesting a combination estrogen-progestin pill. However, the Mayo Clinic acknowledges that, despite the health risks, “systemic estrogen is still the most effective treatment for menopausal symptoms.”
In men, HRT increases the risk of prostate growth, breast enlargement, decreased testicle size, and a decrease in sperm count.
At Vitality Medical & Wellness, we understand these risks, which is why we work so closely with our patients to create a hormone replacement therapy 100% tailored to their individual needs. As complete therapy providers, we closely monitor and, if necessary, adjust on-going results.
